Slavery and states' rights

The events leading to the Civil War center on a clash over slavery and how it would be handled in new states and territories, combined with disputes about whether the federal government could tell states what to do. Slavery shaped political, economic, and moral divides between North and South, and the question of whether slavery would expand into new areas produced intense conflict in Congress, in state legislatures, and in popular votes. Laws and events like the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the violence known as Bleeding Kansas, and the Dred Scott decision all intensified tensions by arguing over the expansion and protection of slavery. At the same time, Southern leaders invoked states’ rights to argue that states should determine whether slavery would exist there and to resist federal power they saw as threatening the institution. When Abraham Lincoln, who opposed expanding slavery into new territories, was elected, Southern states chose to secede, leading to war. The combination of slavery as the central issue and the competing claim of states’ rights to control slavery in new areas makes this option the most accurate reflection of what led to the Civil War. Taxation without representation belongs to the American Revolution era, and industrialization, while affecting regional differences, did not by itself trigger the war.
